As the Somnath temple in Gujarat gears up to mark 75 years since its reconstruction on May 11, a five-day religious event named ‘Somnath Amrit Parv-2026’ has commenced. The celebrations kicked off with Atirudra rituals conducted by the Sompura Brahmin community at the temple’s yagna hall. Over the next five days, 51 Brahmins will participate in chanting sessions, performing recitations twice daily.
Starting from Saturday, the program will expand to include a three-day Homatmak Maharudra Yagna, where 45 Brahmins will conduct ritual offerings following scriptural procedures. This segment is expected to witness around 1.25 lakh oblations made throughout the ceremonies. The rituals have been organized in connection with the completion of 75 years since the temple’s reconstruction, according to Hemalbhai Bhatt, the president of the Sompura Brahmin community.
The yagna, conducted as part of the Amrit Parv commemorations, aims to promote global peace and human welfare amidst ongoing international tensions and conflicts. The celebrations will culminate on May 11 with a Kumbhabhishek ritual at the temple spire, using water collected from 11 sacred pilgrimage sites. The ceremony will involve Vedic chanting and prescribed scriptural rites, with the temple adorned and continuous rituals and worship arrangements in place.
The event has attracted devotees from various states, engaging in darshan and witnessing the ongoing Vedic ceremonies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Somnath on May 11 to partake in the concluding rituals. The five-day observance, featuring multiple religious programs, is set to continue leading up to the anniversary date, with the rituals serving as the focal point of the commemorative events at the Somnath shrine.
