South Africa’s National Assembly is set to resume impeachment-related proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa following a Constitutional Court ruling. The court found that the parliament acted unconstitutionally by dismissing an independent panel report on the Phala Phala issue involving Ramaphosa, potentially paving the way for impeachment proceedings.
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza confirmed that the parliament will adhere to the court’s decision and restart the Section 89 process linked to the independent panel report on the Phala Phala farm matter. This matter revolves around the alleged misappropriation of approximately $580,000 from Ramaphosa’s private game farm in Limpopo Province in 2020, leading to public scrutiny over the proper declaration and reporting of the funds.
Didiza stated that she will oversee the scheduling, timelines, and support required to ensure the impeachment committee concludes its work impartially, efficiently, and in line with constitutional and parliamentary regulations. Further details on the committee’s structure and operational procedures will be communicated through official channels in the near future.
