South Korea and Singapore have initiated discussions to enhance their bilateral free trade agreement (FTA). The first round of negotiations took place in Singapore, focusing on various aspects such as supply chains, the green economy, and aviation industry maintenance. The talks aim to strengthen economic ties between the two nations amidst global trade uncertainties.
The negotiations coincide with the visit of South Korean Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo to Singapore. This move follows an agreement reached by the two countries during a leaders’ summit a month ago to commence negotiations. Minister Yeo engaged in meetings with key Singaporean officials to address trade-related issues and explore opportunities for cooperation.
During the discussions, both sides deliberated on enhancing the existing FTA between South Korea and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). They also explored avenues for collaboration in energy, biopharmaceuticals, and supply chain management. Minister Yeo met with energy trading firms and Korean oil refineries in Singapore to strategize responses to global energy challenges.
Furthermore, Minister Yeo explored possibilities for Singaporean investments in Seoul’s advanced industries and enhancing Korea’s consumer goods exports to Singapore. Meetings with representatives from Singapore’s Temasek and Shopee aimed at fostering economic partnerships and boosting trade relations between the two countries.
