South Korea clarified that there are no talks with the United States regarding reducing the 28,500 US troops stationed in Korea. This statement came after US President Donald Trump mentioned the possibility of cutting American troops in Germany.
The US is reportedly contemplating consequences for NATO allies who declined naval support requests in the Strait of Hormuz amid tensions with Iran. However, South Korea emphasized that discussions on reducing US Forces Korea (USFK) have not taken place.
While the Trump administration aims to enhance alliances by urging allies to increase their defense responsibilities, concerns arise about potential adjustments in USFK’s posture against North Korean threats. USFK Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson highlighted the importance of troop capabilities over numbers for effective deterrence.
Brunson also emphasized USFK’s broader regional role beyond the Korean Peninsula, aligning with US efforts to ensure operational flexibility in the Indo-Pacific region to counter China’s assertiveness.
