A South Korean national detained in the Philippines has been temporarily sent back to South Korea for investigation into alleged cross-border drug trafficking. Park Wang-yeol, a convicted criminal serving a 60-year prison sentence in the Philippines for killing three South Koreans in 2016, is suspected of smuggling drugs into South Korea through accomplices using social media platforms. Known as a “drug kingpin” with the alias “Worldwide” on Telegram, Park arrived at Incheon International Airport aboard an Asiana Airlines flight at 6:34 a.m.
He was escorted by police and justice ministry officials upon arrival, heading to the Gyeonggi Bukbu Provincial Police for further processing. The repatriation follows a request from President Lee Jae Myung to the Philippines for cooperation, after over nine years of Seoul’s efforts to secure Park’s return. The government aims to ensure that criminals hiding overseas are brought to justice, as stated by presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung.
Upon his return, law enforcement authorities will take Park into custody promptly for a comprehensive investigation into the drug trafficking allegations. The extradition treaty between South Korea and the Philippines allows for temporary repatriation for criminal proceedings, suspending trial or sentence execution in the Philippines. The government pledges to uncover all criminal activities by Park, pursue his accomplices and illicit gains, and enhance efforts to combat transnational crimes.
