South Korea’s police have requested an arrest warrant for a woman who staged a solo blockade at a vote counting center last month. The woman allegedly obstructed sports groups from entering the Olympic Park Handball Gymnasium in Seoul on June 16. Despite efforts to resolve the situation, she refused to move, leading to the police applying for the warrant on charges of obstruction of business.
The Seoul Songpa Police Station is pursuing the arrest warrant, with the Seoul Eastern District Court set to hold a hearing on the case. Additionally, the police have sought arrest warrants for a man in his 30s for unauthorized searching of personal belongings of the national women’s youth handball team and three men in their 20s for cursing at police officers and impeding their duties. These actions stem from protests triggered by ballot paper shortages at polling stations during the local elections on June 3.
South Korean Prime Minister Kim Min-seok has urged a swift and thorough investigation into the ballot shortages. Emphasizing the importance of bipartisan cooperation in investigating the issue to strengthen democracy, Kim’s call for action aligns with the National Assembly’s initiation of procedures for a potential parliamentary inquiry into the matter.
