The southwest monsoon has now reached Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, and other parts of North India. While Delhi awaits heavy showers, the India Meteorological Department forecasts cloudy skies and intermittent rainfall until July 9, offering respite from the heat with a drop in daytime temperatures.
Rain alerts have been issued for Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh from July 6 to July 8. Uttar Pradesh, particularly western areas like Noida and Ghaziabad, will see rainfall on July 8 and 9, while eastern districts expect showers from July 7 to July 9. Rajasthan is also set for heavy rainfall until July 9, with the eastern region experiencing intense showers and the west facing thunderstorms.
Monsoon activity has intensified in Uttar Pradesh, with regions like Lucknow, Kanpur, and Unnao witnessing continuous rainfall. The Awadh belt and other areas have reported steady showers. In Purvanchal, districts like Gorakhpur and Varanasi are on rain alert until July 7, while western districts including Muzaffarnagar and Ghaziabad will see monsoon showers until July 9.
The IMD reports the southwest monsoon advancing into more parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana, aided by a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal. Heavy rainfall is expected in Gujarat, Konkan, central Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh until July 6. The Himalayan region and central India will also experience widespread rainfall, with thunderstorms and gusty winds likely in various areas.
June 2026 was the fifth-driest June in India since 1901, with rainfall nearly 39% below the long-term average. Delhi’s Safdarjung observatory recorded significantly lower rainfall than usual, highlighting the dry conditions in the region.
