Spain has earned an additional UEFA Champions League spot for the upcoming season following Rayo Vallecano’s triumph over Strasbourg in the UEFA Conference League semi-final, securing a 1-0 win. Rayo Vallecano’s victory marked their first-ever European final appearance, contributing to Spain overtaking Germany in this season’s UEFA coefficient rankings. With a total of 22.093 coefficient points, Spain surpassed Germany’s 21.785 points after Bayern Munich’s exit from the Champions League semi-finals against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
This success ensures that La Liga will have eight representatives in European competitions next season, with five teams set to compete in the Champions League. The additional spot enhances the opportunity for more Spanish clubs to qualify for European competitions through their domestic league standings. Atletico Madrid has already secured a place in the Champions League, joining FC Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Villarreal among the qualified teams.
Real Betis currently occupies the fifth position and is well-placed to secure the extra Champions League slot, although Celta Vigo retains a slight chance of climbing the table. Real Sociedad has clinched a Europa League berth by winning the Copa del Rey, while the sixth-place finisher in La Liga will claim the second Europa League spot, and the team in seventh will earn a place in the Conference League.
Getafe, Athletic Bilbao, and even Osasuna, currently in 10th place, are still in contention for European football next season. Rayo Vallecano is now set to face Crystal Palace in the Conference League final in Leipzig on May 27, aiming to conclude their remarkable European campaign with a historic continental title.
