The Special Investigation Team disclosed that Ashok Kharat, a self-proclaimed godman, exploited individuals by using alleged divine powers and threats of harm to their families for sexual purposes. Kharat purportedly employed deceptive tactics at the Ishaneshwar Temple complex to deceive victims into believing in his supernatural capabilities. Leveraging religious sentiments, he coerced money from victims through the use of items like pebbles and rudraksha beads. A total of 17 First Information Reports have been filed against Kharat in Nashik and Ahilyanagar districts, encompassing charges of sexual assault, fraud, and violations of anti-superstition laws.
The investigation, initiated in line with Government Resolution No. 73/2026, focuses on multiple cases involving Ashok Kharat. The Special Investigation Team, comprising 24 personnel, has been probing 11 specific cases since March 20, 2026. Under statutory guidelines, charge sheets for crimes against women must be submitted within 60 days, with two already filed in court. Statements from over 105 witnesses have been recorded, unveiling a disturbing pattern of exploitation. To safeguard survivors’ dignity, the cyber cell has collaborated with Maharashtra Cyber to remove 13,175 objectionable video links and block 451 social media accounts sharing sensitive content.
Ashok Kharat, who spent 49 days in police custody for interrogation, is currently in judicial custody facing multiple charges.
