Sri Lanka Women’s captain Chamari Athapaththu highlighted the team’s emphasis on enhancing power-hitting skills under new head coach Jamie Siddons as they set off for Bangladesh for a crucial three-match ODI and T20 series starting on April 20.
Athapaththu emphasized the significance of the tour, noting the opportunity to secure valuable points that could help Sri Lanka avoid the uncertainty of qualifying playoffs for the upcoming ODI World Cup. She mentioned the team’s focus on improving power-hitting to secure direct qualification.
Reflecting on the growth of women’s cricket in Sri Lanka during her tenure, Athapaththu expressed pride in the progress made from humble beginnings. She praised the young players for stepping up and contributing to the evolution of the game.
The skipper acknowledged the absence of experienced batter Vishmi Gunaratne due to injury, considering it unfortunate but expressing confidence in her replacement. Athapaththu credited Sri Lanka Cricket, former players, and the coaching staff for their support in uplifting women’s cricket.
The ODI matches against Bangladesh are scheduled for April 20, 22, and 25 in Rajshahi, while the T20Is will take place on April 28, 30, and May 2 in Sylhet. Athapaththu will lead the team in both formats, supported by experienced players and emerging talents.
