As the Assembly elections in Assam progress, Sri Lankan delegates visited a polling station in Kamrup district and planted a sapling as part of the International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP). The Election Commission of India shared this eco-friendly gesture on social media, highlighting the importance of sustainable elections.
The IEVP 2026 was initiated by the Election Commission of India in New Delhi on April 7 for the upcoming general elections in Assam, Kerala, and Puducherry. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, along with other Election Commissioners, inaugurated the program, emphasizing the significance of conducting free and fair elections as a cornerstone of democracy.
Delegates from 23 countries, including representatives from foreign missions in Delhi, are participating in the first phase of the IEVP. They are engaging in activities such as observing Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs), participating in mock polls, and interacting with experts to gain insights into India’s election management practices.
The IEVP serves as a platform for international cooperation, allowing Election Management Bodies (EMBs) from various countries to learn from India’s electoral framework and operational mechanisms. By showcasing the best practices of the world’s largest democracy, the program aims to promote knowledge exchange and innovation in election management globally.
