Due to fresh snowfall, the strategic Srinagar-Jammu national highway has been closed for traffic. This closure is a result of snow accumulation at the Navyug Tunnel ends in the Qazigund and Banihal areas. Travelers are advised against using the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway, Mughal Road, SSG Road, and Sinthan Road until further notice.
The closure has also impacted air travel, with all morning flights at Srinagar International Airport being canceled. Airport officials reported the cancellation of eight flights due to adverse weather conditions. The Meteorological Department has forecast light to moderate rain/snow across the union territory, with potential heavy rain/snow and gusty winds at some places.
The MeT Department has issued an advisory urging caution and recommended confirming highway statuses before travel due to expected inclement weather conditions. Farmers are advised to halt farming activities until Wednesday, and residents in higher areas are cautioned against venturing into avalanche-prone regions. The ongoing ‘Chillai Kalan’ period, known for harsh winter cold, is set to conclude on January 30, with recent snowfall easing concerns about water resources in the region.
