Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka concluded his final appearance at the Swiss Open in Gstaad, where he kickstarted his ATP Tour career over two decades ago. The 41-year-old Swiss, who will retire at the season’s end, made his tour-level debut in Gstaad in 2003 and reached his first ATP Tour final two years later, marking the beginning of a successful tennis journey. Wawrinka’s farewell match in Gstaad ended with a defeat to Jaime Faria in a closely contested three-setter.
The tournament honored Wawrinka with a special farewell ceremony after his match, presenting him with skis inscribed with ‘The Man,’ a nod to his popular nickname ‘Stan the Man.’ Wawrinka expressed gratitude to the crowd and the tournament for their unwavering support throughout his career. A video tribute featuring messages from fellow ATP Tour stars like Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud was also showcased during the ceremony.
Throughout his illustrious career, Wawrinka clinched 16 tour-level titles, including three Grand Slam victories at the Australian Open, Roland Garros, and the US Open. Among Swiss male players since 1990, only Roger Federer, with 103 titles, has secured more wins than Wawrinka.
