Former England cricketer Stuart Broad expressed disappointment with the MCG pitch’s condition on the first day of the Boxing Day Test. Broad highlighted the excessive movement of the pitch, suggesting underlying issues.
English fast bowler Josh Tongue’s remarkable performance, claiming figures of 5-45, led to Australia being bowled out for 152, with England falling for just 110 on an eventful opening day. This marked the first instance in 74 years of 20 wickets falling on the first day of a Test match in Australia.
Broad criticized the pitch further, stating that the level of movement observed was beyond what is typically required for Test match bowlers. He emphasized that while good pitches offer bounce, excessive sideways movement is undesirable.
Josh Tongue made history by becoming the first English bowler in the 21st century to secure a five-wicket haul in Men’s Tests at the MCG. This achievement marked the first time since 1998 that an England bowler had accomplished this feat at the MCG. Tongue’s performance surpassed his previous best in Test cricket, where he took 5-66 against Ireland at Lord’s in 2023.
The Boxing Day Test witnessed a record-breaking attendance of 94,199 spectators at the MCG, surpassing the previous record set during the 2015 Cricket World Cup final between Australia and New Zealand.
