Another student, Jaibir Singh Dodia (21), reportedly died by suicide at the Kharagpur IIT campus in West Midnapore district. He jumped from the eighth floor of the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall on Saturday morning. Upon receiving the news, police personnel from Hijli police station went to the scene.
The 21-year-old was taken to BC Roy Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Authorities at IIT Kharagpur have informed the student’s family about the tragic incident. The deceased student, originally from Ghuma area in Ahmedabad, was a third-year Mechanical Engineering student residing in Nehru Hall at the IIT Kharagpur campus.
He was discovered on the ground after allegedly jumping from the eighth floor by fellow students. Security guards and other students rushed him to the hospital. Police are investigating various aspects of the case, including his movements from Nehru Hall to Atal Bihari Vajpayee Hall and how he accessed the roof.
CCTV footage is being reviewed by the police to determine the student’s departure from Nehru Hall. Concerns have been raised about the safety and mental well-being of students on the campus. Notably, in 2025, seven students from IIT Kharagpur passed away, with five of them found hanging.
