Students’ organization Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) has submitted a memorandum to Delhi University Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Singh, requesting an expansion of one-year postgraduate seats. Bhim Kumar, a representative of KYS Delhi unit, highlighted that despite the introduction of a four-year undergraduate program by DU, the availability of one-year postgraduate seats remains limited. Only about 1,100 seats are currently offered across 46 departments for one-year postgraduate courses.
According to reports, over 31,000 students are eligible for one-year master’s courses in various DU colleges. The KYS emphasized the need for DU to allocate more seats per course for one-year master’s programs to accommodate the significant number of students who opted for the additional year in undergraduate studies. The organization stressed that this increase is crucial as DU is one of the few universities in India offering one-year postgraduate courses.
The KYS pointed out that the move to introduce four-year undergraduate courses aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, which assured one-year master’s programs for four-year undergraduates. However, the organization expressed concern that this commitment is not being upheld, leading to disappointment among students. The KYS met with the Dean, Students’ Welfare, to present their memorandum and urge a substantial increase in seats for one-year postgraduate courses. Bhim Kumar warned of escalating their efforts if their demand is not met.
