The Supreme Court has extended the tenure of a committee overseeing humanitarian issues in Manipur until July 31. This committee, led by three women judges, was appointed to address concerns related to women and children affected by sectarian strife in Manipur. It is responsible for gathering information on violence against women, monitoring relief camp conditions, and deciding on compensation for victims.
The committee, under the leadership of Justice Gita Mittal, is also tasked with facilitating compensation and restitution for victims of violence in Manipur. The extension of the committee’s tenure was approved by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi.
The Supreme Court has granted the committee an extension until July 31, 2026, as its earlier tenure had expired in July 2025. This extension allows the committee to continue its work in overseeing compensation for damages to properties affected by violence. The committee is required to provide updated status reports to the apex court on a fortnightly basis.
The establishment of this committee aims to rebuild trust in the justice system and uphold the rule of law in Manipur. The Supreme Court emphasized the importance of preventing sexual violence against women during sectarian conflicts, stating that such acts are a severe violation of constitutional values. The committee plays a crucial role in ensuring justice and protection for victims in Manipur.
