Actor and singer-turned politician, Supriyo Baral, known as Babul Supriyo, criticized the Youth Congress workers for their “shirtless protest” at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi. After resigning from the BJP and joining Trinamool Congress post the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, Supriyo became the West Bengal Information Technology and Electronics Minister. His social media post condemning the protest has sparked discussions in political circles, contrasting with Trinamool Congress’ initial silence on the issue.
Supriyo expressed disapproval of the Youth Congress members’ actions at the AI summit, stating that such behavior during an event attended by global leaders sends a negative message about India’s priorities. While acknowledging the right to protest in a democracy, he emphasized the importance of responsible conduct when representing the country internationally. According to Supriyo, political disagreements should not compromise the nation’s reputation and dignity.
Despite Supriyo’s remarks, Trinamool Congress leaders have refrained from commenting on the issue. Sources close to him within the party suggested that his statements transcend his political affiliation, given his role as the state’s Information Technology and Electronics Minister. A Trinamool Congress insider highlighted the connection between the summit where the protest occurred and the department supervised by Supriyo, indicating that his comments were in line with his ministerial responsibilities.
