India’s T20 World Cup-winning captain, Suryakumar Yadav, has broken his silence after being replaced as the men’s T20I captain. He extended his best wishes to the national team and congratulated Vaibhav Sooryavanshi on his maiden international call-up. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced Shreyas Iyer as the new T20I captain, omitting Suryakumar from the squads for the upcoming tours.
Suryakumar took to social media, posting an Instagram story with a photo of the Indian team, expressing his support for the team’s future challenges. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar acknowledged the difficulty of the decision to remove Suryakumar as captain, despite his leadership in winning the T20 World Cup earlier this year. Agarkar mentioned Suryakumar’s recent batting struggles as a factor in the decision.
The 35-year-old cricketer lauded 15-year-old batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who earned a spot in India’s T20I squad after an impressive IPL season. Sooryavanshi’s selection follows his outstanding performance in IPL 2026, where he emerged as a standout player. Suryakumar praised Sooryavanshi’s achievement and expressed excitement to witness his journey in international cricket.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s inclusion in the national squad marks a significant milestone in his career, considering his exceptional IPL 2026 performance. The young left-handed batter’s remarkable season, including 776 runs and a Most Valuable Player award, led to his selection. If Sooryavanshi debuts in the upcoming series, he could become India’s youngest-ever international cricketer, potentially surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s record debut at 16 years and 205 days.
