In a significant move in Tamil Nadu politics, the Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) has decided to part ways with the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The party aims to enhance its organizational base and expand its independent political influence in the state. The decision was announced by TMC(M) president G.K. Vasan after a meeting of the party’s executive committee in Chennai.
Vasan emphasized that the decision to exit the BJP-led alliance was not due to any ideological differences or political conflicts with its allies. The party’s leadership believes that operating independently will offer more opportunities for mobilizing cadre and expanding the party’s reach across Tamil Nadu. Vasan also recognized the significance of electoral alliances in the state’s politics.
While alliances are crucial during elections, the focus now for TMC(M) is on rebuilding and strengthening the party. Vasan acknowledged that the alliance the party was part of had not seen electoral success in recent years. The AIADMK-led NDA, which included TMC(M), faced a setback in the recent Assembly elections, leading to introspection among the alliance partners.
Expressing confidence in the decision, Vasan stated that the party will maintain amicable relations with all its former allies. The move to leave the NDA is seen as a step towards regaining political relevance for the Tamil Maanila Congress. Founded in 1996 by G.K. Moopanar, the party emerged as a significant political entity in Tamil Nadu after splitting from the Indian National Congress.
Under the leadership of G.K. Vasan, the party aims to revive its political standing. The exit from the NDA makes TMC(M) the first constituent of the AIADMK-led alliance to formally withdraw post the Assembly elections.
