The Tamil Nadu BJP has criticized the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president, K. Selvaperunthagai, for alleged political hypocrisy and selective activism on rural employment and governance issues in the state. The BJP spokesperson questioned why Selvaperunthagai had not protested against the DMK government despite actions deemed contrary to Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals. This criticism follows the introduction of the Viksit Bharat – Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) Bill, 2025, by the Union government to replace the MGNREGA, 2005.
The BJP accused the Congress leader of staying silent on Chief Minister M. K. Stalin’s unfulfilled promise to extend the rural employment scheme from 100 to 150 days. According to the BJP, this promise was allegedly a ploy for electoral advantage. The party claimed that the restructuring of the rural employment scheme by the Centre aimed to address irregularities at the local level, preventing misuse of funds by DMK and Congress representatives.
The BJP spokesperson further alleged that the recent protest actions by Selvaperunthagai were mere political theatrics to divert attention from internal dissent within the Congress. He claimed that Congress members were questioning their leadership’s reliance on the DMK and demanding a more equitable distribution of power within the ruling coalition. Contrasting the governance models of the State and Centre, the BJP praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for implementing policies inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, while criticizing what it called an “anti-people administration” in Tamil Nadu under the DMK.
The BJP concluded by predicting an unfavorable electoral outcome for the Congress in the 2026 Assembly elections, citing voter dissatisfaction with the DMK–Congress alliance’s perceived political theatrics.
