Tamil Nadu BJP president Nainar Nagendran has accused the ruling TVK government, led by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, of intentionally delaying the Parandur Greenfield Airport project. Nagendran criticized Industries Minister Nirmal Kumar for allegedly providing misleading information about the project’s feasibility.
Nagendran highlighted that the Union Civil Aviation Ministry had given initial approval for the airport project after thorough technical and environmental assessments. He disputed the minister’s recent claim that a runway could not be built at the proposed site, citing the findings of these studies.
The BJP leader emphasized that the Airports Authority of India, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, had conducted detailed evaluations before endorsing the project. He mentioned that solutions had been proposed to protect water bodies while facilitating airport infrastructure construction.
Questioning the state government’s stance, Nagendran raised concerns about potential hindrances to Tamil Nadu’s economic progress if the Parandur airport project faced further delays. He stressed the importance of a second international airport for the state’s long-term development, citing limitations on expanding the Chennai International Airport.
Nagendran warned that prolonged delays in implementing the Parandur airport project could lead to missed international trade and investment opportunities, impacting future job creation for Tamil Nadu’s youth. He urged the state government to reconsider its position and collaborate with the Centre for the timely execution of the project.
