Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay announced that the lone Rajya Sabha seat from Tamil Nadu, scheduled for elections on September 18, has been given to the Indian National Congress, the alliance partner of TVK. This decision is seen as a significant move to strengthen ties within the opposition alliance for future elections.
The announcement followed a meeting between senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram and Vijay in Chennai, sparking speculation on seat-sharing arrangements and future cooperation. While details of the discussions were not disclosed, sources suggest the focus was on coordinating alliance partners and selecting a consensus candidate for the Upper House election. The allocation of the seat to Congress is a result of these deliberations.
The Congress is expected to reveal its candidate soon. Party leaders have praised TVK’s decision, considering it a display of mutual trust and collaboration within the alliance. The TVK-led alliance, with the support of TVK legislators and five independent and allied MLAs backing Vijay, is well-positioned for victory in the Rajya Sabha poll.
Political analysts view this move as a step towards reinforcing opposition unity in Tamil Nadu and ensuring stability within the TVK-led coalition. As the Rajya Sabha election approaches, focus will shift to the Congress nominee and the broader political implications of this alliance decision.
