Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is gearing up for a significant trip to New Delhi, which is anticipated to hold both political and administrative significance. Unlike his previous visit to the capital related to the Karur crowd-tragedy case, this time, Vijay is heading to Delhi as the leader of the Tamil Nadu government with a focus on strengthening political relationships and seeking financial aid for the state.
During his earlier visits to New Delhi on January 12 and January 19, Vijay had appeared before the CBI in connection with the stampede incident in Karur, where 41 individuals lost their lives at a public gathering on September 27 the previous year. However, his upcoming visit is expected to revolve around different objectives. Reports suggest that Vijay is planning to meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and senior Congress leaders, including Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge.
A formal request for a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been submitted through the Prime Minister’s Office, although the meeting is pending confirmation due to the Prime Minister’s busy schedule. Upon receiving confirmation, the Chief Minister is likely to travel to Delhi promptly. Besides political discussions, Vijay is also expected to present a comprehensive economic agenda to address Tamil Nadu’s financial difficulties.
Recent discussions with senior finance officials have focused on reviewing the state’s financial situation and exploring strategies to overcome economic challenges inherited from past administrations. Officials have advised Vijay that seeking increased financial assistance from the Union government would be the most viable short-term solution. While exploring alternative funding options, officials highlighted the difficulty of immediate alternatives as preparations for the 2026-27 state budget are already in progress.
Preparations are underway to compile a list of requests and financial proposals to be discussed during Vijay’s meeting with the Prime Minister. Additionally, there are indications that Vijay has already conversed with Rahul Gandhi over the phone regarding his upcoming visit to Delhi.
