Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin expressed concerns about the removal of voters from electoral rolls in the state. He highlighted that over 97 lakh voters statewide and nearly 14 lakh voters in Chennai were deleted during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. Udhayanidhi emphasized the need for a thorough verification process to prevent disenfranchisement.
The Deputy Chief Minister urged residents to check their voter status and ensure their names are correctly listed on the rolls. He mentioned that those wrongly excluded could be re-included until January 18, providing an opportunity to rectify any omissions before upcoming elections. Udhayanidhi reiterated that the DMK’s opposition to the rushed process aimed to protect citizens’ voting rights.
In a separate event, Udhayanidhi inaugurated a night shelter for the homeless near Anna Park on Marina Beach. The shelter, constructed at a cost of Rs 86.4 lakh by the Greater Chennai Corporation, can accommodate 86 residents. Equipped with essential amenities and separate sanitation facilities, the shelter aims to assist homeless individuals along the Marina stretch who earn a livelihood through various means.
