Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of Tamil Nadu has declared that the high-level flyover linking Aathupalam and Ukkadam Junction on Oppanakara Road in Coimbatore will be named after C. Subramaniam, a revered national leader and the driving force behind the Green Revolution in India. Stalin emphasized the significance of honoring leaders like Subramaniam who dedicated their lives to the nation beyond political affiliations, highlighting his pivotal role in India’s agricultural progress. The decision to rename the flyover was made following a request by Dr. P.K. Krishnaraj Vanavarayar, with Stalin expressing joy in dedicating this infrastructure project to a leader instrumental in shaping modern India.

C. Subramaniam, known as the mastermind of India’s Green Revolution, played a crucial role in transitioning the country from a food-deficient state to a self-sufficient agricultural powerhouse. His forward-thinking policies laid the groundwork for increased food grain production and ensured national food security. Born on February 15, 1910, in Senguttai Palayam near Pollachi in Coimbatore district, Subramaniam had a distinguished career, serving as Union Minister for Agriculture, Finance, and Defence, as well as Governor of Maharashtra. He was a freedom fighter actively involved in the Quit India Movement and faced imprisonment in 1942 for his anti-British activities.

Stalin lauded Subramaniam’s service to the nation and the people, despite differing political paths, describing him as a towering figure worthy of commemoration. Subramaniam’s exceptional contributions were recognized with the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, in 1998. By renaming the flyover after C. Subramaniam, the Tamil Nadu government pays homage to a visionary leader whose enduring legacy continues to inspire future generations and remains integral to the nation’s development.
