The Tamil Nadu government is developing a comprehensive policy to elevate the Sivakasi fireworks industry into a significant global exporter, focusing on aiding local manufacturers to compete internationally, particularly against Chinese products. Industries Minister S. Keerthana highlighted that this initiative will encompass export promotion, worker safety, infrastructure enhancement, and regulatory reforms to fortify one of the state’s key traditional sectors.
Sivakasi, situated in Virudhunagar district, remains pivotal in India’s fireworks domain, contributing to about 90% of the nation’s firecracker output, with an annual business turnover surpassing Rs 6,000 crore and supporting numerous livelihoods directly and indirectly. Despite its prominence, the industry has encountered challenges like stringent regulations, safety issues, evolving market dynamics, and heightened competition.
The government’s forthcoming policy targets expanding the industry’s presence in global markets, aiming for a substantial surge in exports and positioning Sivakasi as a competitive global fireworks brand. The objective is not only to boost exports but also to empower Sivakasi manufacturers to effectively rival Chinese counterparts in international markets, potentially fostering economic growth in Virudhunagar district and elevating the global recognition of its products.
To facilitate this endeavor, the government intends to establish an expert committee to propose strategies for enhancing factory safety, preventing industrial mishaps, modernizing production techniques, and aligning industry practices with global standards. Emphasis will also be placed on promoting the production of eco-friendly crackers and ensuring adherence to environmental and import regulations of various countries to enhance the market acceptance of Sivakasi goods.
In a bid to support exports, plans are underway to upgrade logistics and transportation infrastructure, facilitating the secure transit of firecrackers through Chennai and Thoothukudi ports, thereby mitigating logistical hurdles faced by manufacturers. The new policy aims to create avenues for small and micro-scale units to venture into international markets, diversifying export opportunities beyond the dominance of a few large companies.
The government’s commitment extends to safeguarding worker welfare and safety, ensuring sustainable industry growth while bolstering the global reputation of Sivakasi and Virudhunagar district.
