The Tamil Nadu government has declared a cash aid of Rs 3,000 for all rice ration card-holding families in honor of the Pongal festival. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin’s decision is aimed at fostering a more inclusive and joyous Pongal celebration for households throughout the state, as per an official government statement.
Pongal, an ancient and esteemed Tamil festival that signifies strong family ties, has been celebrated for millennia. The event is a time to show appreciation to the Sun, the livestock supporting agricultural work, and the farmers who sustain the world and alleviate hunger, the government highlighted.
The state government had previously unveiled an extensive Pongal gift package for rice family cardholders and families residing in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps. This package comprises one kilogram of raw rice, one kilogram of sugar, and a whole sugarcane, to be disbursed via fair price shops across Tamil Nadu.
Around 2.22 crore rice ration cardholders, including families in Sri Lankan Tamil rehabilitation camps, are set to benefit from this scheme. Additionally, the government has organized the distribution of dhotis and sarees to complement the festive welfare measures, with consignments already dispatched to all districts.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has further augmented the festive cheer by directing the provision of a Rs 3,000 Pongal cash gift to all eligible families. The total expenditure for the scheme, encompassing Pongal gift hampers, clothing, and cash assistance, is estimated at Rs 6,936.17 crore.
In preparation for the festival, officials have been instructed to ensure all arrangements are finalized well ahead of time. The distribution of cash aid, Pongal gift hampers, and clothing through fair price shops is scheduled to take place before the commencement of Pongal celebrations to ensure timely assistance for beneficiaries.
This initiative underscores the government’s dedication to social welfare and its commitment to supporting families during significant cultural events, reiterating Pongal as a festival of gratitude, prosperity, and communal joy for the people of Tamil Nadu.
