Tamil Nadu Sports Minister Adhav Arjuna revealed plans to consider establishing a dedicated office for the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association (TNOA). Currently, the association operates without a permanent office, a concern highlighted by the Minister in Chennai. Despite Tamil Nadu’s prominence in sports, it lacks an Olympic Bhavan or a specific office for its Olympic association.
Arjuna pointed out that neighboring states like Karnataka have already set up similar facilities to support sports administration and athlete development. He emphasized the need for Tamil Nadu to secure suitable land for an office dedicated to the Olympic Association within the state. The government is exploring avenues to enhance sports infrastructure statewide and provide necessary support for the growth and functioning of sporting bodies.
The Minister also updated on the progress of the Kalaignar International Centre construction on the East Coast Road (ECR), a significant government infrastructure project. Approximately 40% of the construction work has been completed, with plans for the center to host various events, including cinema screenings and commercial programs. Arjuna highlighted that once operational, the center would allow sports stadiums and grounds to be exclusively reserved for sporting activities and competitions.
Adhav Arjuna expressed concerns over the historical lack of substantial infrastructure support for the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association. He noted the absence of dedicated Olympic infrastructure and specific funding allocated for such facilities in the past. The government is currently engaged in reviewing and assessing various sectors, including sports, to identify infrastructure gaps and enhance facilities. This initiative aligns with the broader goal of strengthening public institutions and creating better infrastructure for future athletes.
