In a move to enhance rural sanitation and support frontline workers, the Tamil Nadu government has raised the monthly salary of sanitation workers in village panchayats from Rs 5,000 to Rs 6,000. This decision is part of a broader initiative to modernize waste management systems and cater to the needs of rural areas facing rapid population growth and urbanization.

To address the increasing solid waste volumes, the government has introduced a new classification system for panchayats, dividing them into ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’ grades. This restructuring aims to streamline sanitation services, improve planning, and allocate resources more efficiently based on the size, population, and waste generation of each panchayat.

The reclassification will enable local administrations to better utilize manpower and infrastructure, ensuring prompt waste collection and cleaner environments in villages. With a rising number of households in rural Tamil Nadu, the Commissioner of Rural Development and Panchayat Raj has been authorized to adjust the sanitation workforce as necessary, enhancing service delivery and reducing the workload on existing workers.

The pay raise of Rs 1,000 per month will benefit numerous sanitation workers involved in solid waste management in village panchayats. This increase applies to workers from self-help groups and panchayat-level federations, crucial for daily cleaning, waste segregation, and disposal in rural communities. To support the higher wages and bolster the sanitation system, the State has allocated Rs 476 crore annually from the State Finance Commission grant.

This action is seen as a positive step towards acknowledging the vital role of sanitation workers in public health and environmental protection in villages. By enhancing compensation and operational capabilities, the government aims to create safer, cleaner, and more sustainable living conditions in rural Tamil Nadu. The pay revision is set to be implemented immediately, providing financial relief and increased job security for workers statewide.
