Tamil Nadu’s Higher Education Minister, P. Viswanathan, reassured that the state’s rights would not be compromised by the new TVK-led government. This statement follows a political uproar regarding the appointment of Vice Chancellors to state-run universities. Viswanathan’s comments in Madurai had triggered strong reactions from various political parties, including the DMK, VCK, CPI, and PMK.
Addressing concerns, Viswanathan clarified that the government’s priority is to safeguard Tamil Nadu’s rights. He emphasized that the government is committed to protecting the interests of all citizens and has no intention of relinquishing any constitutional or administrative powers of the state. The final decision on the Vice Chancellor appointment issue will be made by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay after consultations with relevant officials and Cabinet colleagues.
The controversy revolves around the authority to appoint Vice Chancellors in State universities. Previously, the Tamil Nadu Assembly, under the DMK regime, had passed amendments transferring this authority from the Governor to the Chief Minister. Viswanathan stressed that the new government, led by the TVK, will not compromise the rights of the people of Tamil Nadu.
