In response to the detection of avian influenza (H1N1) in Kerala, the Tamil Nadu Public Health Department has heightened surveillance and preventive measures along the border with Kerala. Reports from Alappuzha and Kottayam districts in Kerala revealed sudden deaths of poultry birds, with tests confirming the presence of H1N1 avian influenza. The Kerala government has intensified disease-control measures in affected areas.
As a precaution, Tamil Nadu authorities are strengthening monitoring at the inter-state border, establishing check-posts at key entry points from Kerala. Vehicles entering from Kerala are being inspected and disinfected to prevent the virus’s entry. Special surveillance has been ordered in districts like Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Theni, Kanyakumari, and Tenkasi that share borders with Kerala.
Health teams are closely monitoring vehicles, especially those carrying poultry, livestock, and agricultural produce from Kerala. Specific advisories have been issued for Sabarimala pilgrims returning from Kerala, urging them to seek medical attention if they show symptoms. In districts with poultry farms like Namakkal, officials are intensifying surveillance and ensuring biosecurity protocols.
Veterinarians are closely monitoring poultry health, reporting unusual deaths promptly, and enforcing farm-level biosecurity measures. Health authorities emphasize the importance of preventive measures and early detection, reassuring the public that there is no need for panic at present. Continuous monitoring and coordination between departments will guide further actions.
The state government is committed to safeguarding public health and the poultry sector, taking all necessary steps to prevent avian influenza spread into Tamil Nadu.
