The Tamil Nadu School Education Department is set to choose School Ambassadors in government schools statewide on July 10. This initiative, known as ‘Namma School Namma Ooru Palli,’ aims to enhance community involvement in the enhancement of government educational institutions. Fresh guidelines have been issued for School Management Committees to select the ambassadors during their meetings on the specified date.
The selected School Ambassadors will serve a two-year term from July 2026 to July 2028. They will collaborate closely with school authorities, School Management Committees, and local stakeholders to enhance the quality of education and promote community ownership of government schools. Their responsibilities include boosting student enrollment, reducing dropout rates, and inspiring students to pursue higher education.
These ambassadors will also engage alumni and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives to enhance school infrastructure and educational resources. Additionally, they will facilitate alumni contributions through mentoring, career guidance, resource mobilization, and voluntary assistance. Furthermore, they will coordinate with local organizations and community members to ensure sustained public engagement in school development activities.
The School Education Department has reported a positive response from former students across Tamil Nadu regarding this initiative. Over 26,000 alumni have registered on the Namma School Namma Ooru Palli portal, indicating their interest in serving as School Ambassadors. The state-level launch of the program took place in January at the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Ashok Nagar, Chennai, emphasizing the government’s vision of transforming government schools into community-driven institutions with active alumni and local support.
To ensure a fair and consistent selection process, Chief Educational Officers (CEOs) will oversee the process at the district level, while headmasters will serve as selection officers in their respective schools. Prior to finalizing appointments, each School Management Committee must pass a formal resolution endorsing the selection of the School Ambassador, ensuring a participatory, transparent, and community-focused process.
