The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-politician C. Joseph Vijay, is closer to forming the next government in Tamil Nadu. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) have extended their unconditional support to TVK following the fractured Assembly election results. With this backing, TVK has secured nine additional MLAs, including five from the Congress, and two each from the CPI and CPI-M.
Vijay’s party, which contested independently, emerged as the largest party by winning 108 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly. To reach the majority mark of 118 and stake a claim to form the government, TVK now needs the support of two more MLAs. The CPI and CPI-M announced their support during a joint press conference in Chennai, clarifying that they will not be part of the Cabinet but will support from outside to ensure the formation of a democratic government.
The political scenario in Tamil Nadu has seen tension over government formation. Congress members protested statewide against the Tamil Nadu Governor’s decision to decline Vijay’s request to form the government without demonstrating support from 118 MLAs. Outgoing Chief Minister M.K. Stalin of the DMK urged the Governor to follow constitutional norms and expedite the formation of a new government. The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), part of the Secular Progressive Alliance, is also likely to support TVK, aligning with the Left parties’ stance.
