Anticipation is rising as Tamil Nadu gears up for urban local body elections, with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) witnessing a surge in leaders and functionaries from both the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK), especially in the western region. This shift in leadership is seen as a response to TVK’s recent electoral success, prompting concerns among opposition parties. The movement of local leaders to the ruling party has sparked discussions within opposition ranks on strategies to counter TVK’s growing influence.
Sources reveal that prominent figures have already switched sides to TVK, including DMK’s Ellapalayam R. Sivakumar, A.K. Balachandar from Namakkal East district, and former Rasipuram municipality councillors Ramkumar and “Gate” Thangavel. Additionally, former AIADMK Minister K.V. Ramalingam has also joined TVK, signaling a trend of defections that may expand further. Political insiders suggest that functionaries from various districts are contemplating similar moves due to TVK’s organizational strength and perceived political ascendancy.
The upcoming local body elections are a key factor influencing these political realignments, with grassroots leaders reassessing their positions amid the belief that TVK could replicate its Assembly success at the municipal and local levels. There is a growing sentiment among local leaders that the ruling party’s performance in the Assembly elections could translate to victories in local contests as well. This sentiment is reportedly driving many functionaries towards TVK, setting the stage for potential shifts in political allegiances.
In the recent Assembly elections, TVK emerged as the largest party by securing 108 seats and later formed the government with support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK, and IUML. DMK won 59 seats, while AIADMK secured 47 seats in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly.
