Indian automaker Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. announced that its total sales, including electric vehicles, reached 71,066 units in January 2026, reflecting a 47.1% surge compared to the previous year. Domestic sales of passenger vehicles, including EVs, rose by 46.1% year-on-year to 70,222 units in January 2026 from 48,076 units in the same period last year. Additionally, the company’s international business saw a significant increase with 844 units sold in January 2026, marking a 251.7% rise from the previous year.
Electric vehicle sales, both in the international and domestic markets, totaled 9,052 units in January 2026, showing a 72.7% increase year-on-year. Tata Motors highlighted a milestone achieved in December 2024, with over 2.5 lakh TATA.ev cars on Indian roads, including the Nexon.ev, the first electric car in India to surpass one lakh cumulative sales. The company also noted its dominant position in the Indian electric vehicle market, representing 66% of all electric passenger vehicles sold.
The Ministry of Heavy Industries played a crucial role in promoting electric vehicles in India during 2025, with substantial investments under the Production Linked Incentive Scheme for the auto sector and the successful implementation of the PM E-DRIVE initiative. Notably, claims amounting to Rs 1,999.94 crore were disbursed under the PLI-Auto Scheme in 2024-25. As of December 31, 2025, incentives were provided for over 13.61 lakh electric vehicles, encompassing two-wheelers, three-wheelers, cars, and electric buses.
