Technology-driven innovation is highlighted as crucial for India’s economic progress, according to Union Minister of State, Dr Jitendra Singh. He emphasized the shift from research to industry, startups, and national development, stressing the need for science to transition from laboratories to markets for tangible impact. Dr Singh’s remarks were made during the 56th Foundation Day of the Department of Science and Technology at the Indian National Science Academy (INSA) Auditorium in New Delhi.
India’s science and technology landscape has significantly evolved in the past decade, driven by policy decisions that have opened up sectors like space and nuclear energy to private participation. This transformation has created new avenues for startups and industries, allowing India to harness its vast human resources and enhance its position in the global innovation sphere.
Dr Singh pointed out the rapid growth in the space sector following its inclusion of private players, leading to a surge in startup-driven innovations, particularly in satellite technologies. This development not only fuels economic growth but also bolsters national preparedness. Similar progress is observed in other emerging technology sectors, signifying a broader wave of innovation in the country.
Emphasizing the importance of collaboration between government, academia, and industry, Dr Singh highlighted that scientific advancement cannot happen in isolation from the private sector. India’s global scientific recognition has notably increased, evidenced by a rise in highly cited research publications, showcasing both quality and impact. The expansion of India’s startup ecosystem from a few hundred to over two lakhs in the past decade reflects a maturing innovation landscape.
Principal Scientific Adviser Professor Ajay Kumar Sood stressed the necessity of aligning research with technology development and commercialization, while Secretary DST, Professor Abhay Karandikar, outlined key initiatives like the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), RDI Fund, and National Quantum Mission aimed at fortifying India’s science and innovation ecosystem.
