The Special Investigation Team (SIT) of Telangana’s Crime Investigation Department (CID) has apprehended 11 individuals in a nationwide operation targeting online betting networks. The crackdown, which spanned New Delhi, Gujarat, and Punjab, also led to the freezing of 46 mule bank accounts. Director General of CID, Charu Sinha, disclosed that the accused were engaged in online betting offenses in multiple states.
Data from the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal (NCRP) indicates a significant presence of the accused in various states, with 225 complaints and 73 criminal cases filed against them in states like Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, and others. The arrests stem from a case initiated by the SIT last year at Karimnagar-II Town Police Station based on a complaint by a software engineer, Challa Sai Krishna Reddy, who suffered a substantial loss due to online betting on Dafabet.
The accused, who promoted betting on cricket, casino games, and the Aviator platform through the Dafabet app, attracted victims with promises of easy money and high returns. Funds were collected using various methods, including UPI IDs, QR codes, and internet banking. Despite efforts to evade capture by frequently changing phones and locations, sustained surveillance efforts led to the arrest of the 11 individuals on May 29.
