Ten additional individuals have been apprehended in connection with an episode in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district where a faction of Trinamool Congress supporters, led by Regina Bibi, wife of detained party leader Jahangir Khan, allegedly attempted to breach the Falta Police Station on June 16 to free him from police custody. The total number of arrests in this case has now risen to 25, as stated by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari during a press briefing on Friday.
Chief Minister Adhikari disclosed that he has instructed the authorities to identify the assets of those implicated in the assault, seize them, auction them off, and recover the expenses incurred due to harm to public property. He mentioned that cases related to the Falta incident have been filed against the assailants under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, which include clauses pertaining to activities against the state. Adhikari emphasized that not only will stringent penalties be imposed on the attackers, but compensation for the destruction will also be reclaimed by seizing their assets.
Adhikari further stated that out of the 25 individuals arrested in connection with the Falta attack, 12 are presently in police custody, while the remaining 13 are in judicial custody. He assured that the culprits will be identified and punished after reviewing videos circulating on social media platforms. Additionally, Adhikari announced that he has directed the state police’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to take charge of the inquiry into the killing of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker Prashanta Dey in Bagnan, Howrah district, allegedly by Trinamool Congress activists.
Furthermore, Adhikari mentioned that a compensation of Rs 9 lakh will be granted to the deceased’s family members. Of this amount, Rs 4 lakh will be allocated from the state treasury, while the remaining Rs 5 lakh will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund.
