Tension arose at a polling booth in Chennai’s Mylapore Assembly constituency when a dispute erupted between BJP candidate Tamilisai Soundararajan and DMK polling agents regarding alleged voting irregularities. The incident took place at a polling station in Alwarpet, where Tamilisai objected, claiming that some individuals were allowed to vote without proper identification. This led to a heated exchange of words between Tamilisai and the DMK agents.
Senior election officials and political leaders exercised their voting rights as polling continued across Tamil Nadu’s 234 Assembly constituencies. Tamil Nadu’s Chief Electoral Officer, Archana Patnaik, cast her vote in Virugambakkam, Maduravoyal constituency, and oversaw polling arrangements. Meanwhile, Tamil Maanila Congress (Moopanar) President, G.K. Vasan, voted in Alwarpet Higher Secondary School, urging citizens to actively participate in the democratic process.
In Sivaganga district, senior Congress leader P. Chidambaram voted in Karaikudi and praised the enthusiasm displayed by young voters. Chidambaram emphasized the significance of electing a government dedicated to governance and progress, cautioning against voting based on “imaginary ideas.” The ongoing Tamil Nadu Assembly elections feature a competitive contest, with the DMK-led Secular Progressive Alliance vying to maintain power against the AIADMK-led NDA and other parties.
Polling in Tamil Nadu has been relatively peaceful, except for isolated incidents like the clash in Mylapore. Stringent security measures have been implemented to ensure fair elections, with authorities closely monitoring the situation throughout the day.
