Tension escalated in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, as the Lucknow Municipal Corporation, with heavy police presence, demolished allegedly illegal advocates’ chambers and shops near the district court premises. Nearly 240 structures were razed during the operation, causing protests from lawyers present at the site.
The demolition led to clashes between protesting advocates and police, with lawyers raising objections and attempting to halt the drive. In a dramatic turn, one advocate tried to hang himself in protest, but was rescued by the police.
Amid accusations of lack of communication and rehabilitation measures, lawyers voiced anger over the demolition. Advocate S.P. Singh criticized the authorities for not issuing proper notices or identifying chambers before the demolition, expressing disillusionment with the ruling party.
Police officials defended the operation, stating it was carried out as per court orders and legal procedures. DCP Crime Kamlesh Dixit clarified that prior notices had been issued before the anti-encroachment drive.
The demolished structures were reportedly unauthorized constructions on public land, causing congestion and hindrance near the court premises. Despite the tensions, no significant injuries were reported, with senior officials monitoring the situation as lawyers demanded a stop to the demolition and requested dialogue with the authorities.
