The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation Council faced turmoil as the Opposition demanded the resignation of BJP councillor R. Sugathan, currently in judicial custody under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act. Chaos erupted over a dispute concerning the attendance register, with allegations that it was manipulated to allow Sugathan, in detention, to sign it later. Tensions rose as UDF councillors tried to sign the register, leading to a confrontation with BJP members who reportedly snatched it away.
The situation escalated into physical altercations between BJP, LDF, and UDF councillors, halting the council proceedings. Amid the chaos, LDF council party leader S.P. Deepak pushed for urgent discussion on Sugathan’s resignation, citing public criticism over a detained councillor holding office. UDF members intensified their protest with slogans and placards, accusing a BJP councillor of assaulting Opposition members during the confrontation.
Despite protests, the BJP-led administration continued with the council agenda and adjourned the meeting swiftly. The UDF and LDF contested the validity of the proceedings, criticizing the ruling side for disregarding democratic norms. With tensions high following previous protests and injuries to LDF councillors, heavy police presence was maintained at the Corporation premises to prevent further escalation.
