A Special NDPS Court in Haryana’s Panipat district has handed down 20 years of rigorous imprisonment to three drug traffickers involved in a 2021 interstate charas trafficking case. The convicted individuals, Mohd. Wali, Mohd. Rehan Shah, and Imran Khan, residents of Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit, were found guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for carrying 10 kg of charas.
The court not only sentenced the trio to two decades of rigorous imprisonment but also imposed a Rs 2 lakh penalty on each of them, according to an official from NCB’s Delhi Zonal Unit. The judgment was delivered by the Special Court on May 5, as confirmed by the NCB in a statement.
Originating from an interception on September 28, 2021, in Panipat based on specific intelligence, the case led to the confiscation of 10 kg of charas sourced from Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. The NCB attributed the success of the case to its meticulous investigation, which identified and apprehended the kingpin in Jammu, disrupting the entire supply chain.
The sentencing is seen as a significant deterrent against narco-trafficking, underscoring the NCB’s commitment to enhancing prosecution quality and investigative standards. This outcome contributes to the national conviction rate and underscores the agency’s determination to pursue maximum penalties under the NDPS Act. The NCB has encouraged citizens to report narcotics trafficking through the MANAS — National Narcotics Helpline (Toll-Free Number: 1933), assuring confidentiality of informers’ identities.
