Three additional suspects have been apprehended in connection with the Turkman Gate stone-pelting incident, bringing the total number of arrests to 16, as confirmed by the Delhi Police. The newly detained individuals are identified as Mohammad Naved, Mohammad Faiz, and Mohammad Ubaidullah, all residents of Turkman Gate.
Earlier, on Friday, two individuals were taken into custody in relation to the same case. The incident traces back to January 7 when the Municipal Corporation of Delhi conducted a demolition drive near the Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque in Turkman Gate, following court directives. As the demolition progressed, a group of residents gathered outside the mosque, protesting the action and hurling stones at security forces.
Police responded by using tear gas to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation. Authorities had earlier identified around 30 individuals involved in the unrest. Eight accused have been remanded to judicial custody until January 21 by a Delhi court. The Delhi Police are set to summon Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Mohibbullah Nadvi, who was reportedly present at the site before the violent protest erupted.
Despite being asked to leave, Nadvi allegedly stayed at the location during the stone-pelting incident. To maintain peace, a significant deployment of police and paramilitary units has been made at critical sites, with senior officers overseeing the security arrangements. The police are actively pursuing other suspects linked to the case, with the investigation ongoing. Further updates are anticipated.
