Police in East Burdwan’s Katwa have arrested three brothers linked to the Trinamool Congress over various serious criminal cases, sparking fresh political controversy. The arrested individuals, identified as Babulal Sheikh, Kochi Sheikh, and Chhattu Sheikh, all belonging to the same family, were taken into custody by Katwa Police Station officers. They underwent a mandatory medical examination at Katwa Sub-Divisional Hospital before being presented in a local court.
Authorities have disclosed that the accused face charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Allegedly, the trio has been engaged in intimidation and exerting influence in the area for an extended period, instilling fear among locals. Police have requested custody of the suspects for further probe into the matter.
The arrests have heightened political tensions in Katwa, with leaders from opposing parties trading accusations. BJP legislator Krishna Ghosh from Katwa has accused the former Trinamool Congress government of harboring criminal elements. Ghosh emphasized that the current administration is taking action against wrongdoers, countering the alleged protection provided earlier.
Family members of the arrested trio have refuted all charges, asserting that the accusations are politically motivated and baseless. They claim that the individuals were falsely implicated after being initially summoned by the police. The incident has stirred discussions within local political spheres as law enforcement continues its inquiries.
Following the West Bengal Assembly election outcomes, police have initiated actions against Trinamool Congress members accused of instigating fear in the state, marking a shift in the prevailing scenario.
