Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mitali Bag, representing Arambagh in West Bengal, was injured in an attack in Goghat, Hooghly district, while en route to an election rally of party General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee. Her car was vandalized during the incident, and she sustained injuries, leading to her hospitalization. Bag accused BJP supporters of orchestrating the attack, claiming they attempted to silence her voice.
The BJP refuted the allegations, instead accusing TMC workers of instigating the violence. Biman Ghosh, former BJP Arambagh president and Pursurah candidate, alleged that TMC leader Sanjay Khan and his associates attacked BJP workers during campaigning, resulting in injuries and damage to property. The BJP candidate’s car was also reportedly vandalized in the clash.
Mitali Bag, traveling from her residence to attend Abhishek Banerjee’s event, was targeted in Goghat. She went live on social media post-incident, asserting that BJP workers were responsible for the assault. Bag highlighted the presence of shattered glass in her vehicle, emphasizing the need for unity among women voters to combat such suppression of voices.
Expressing dissatisfaction with the Election Commission’s response, Bag criticized their actions in the aftermath of the clash. She called for accountability and urged the community to stand against such acts of violence and intimidation during elections. Following the altercation, the Election Commission has requested a detailed report from the district administration.
