Two individuals are still missing following a tragic boat accident in Chhattisgarh’s Bijapur district, where a mother and her newborn lost their lives. The incident occurred when a small boat capsized in the Indravati river, with two survivors rescued by local villagers in the Bhairamgarh region of Bastar division. Search operations are ongoing for the missing woman’s husband and another child from the group.
The boat, which was the only means of transport for six residents of Bodga village, overturned in turbulent waters while they were returning home from a weekly market. The bodies of the woman and her infant were recovered after an 18-hour search, with the baby tragically found tied to the mother with a towel, indicating her attempt to shield the child during the accident.
The lack of safer alternatives like bridges and inadequate rescue infrastructure in remote areas like Uspari Jhilli ghat has been highlighted by annual boat capsize incidents. Authorities and locals have been advocating for permanent crossings and improved safety measures to prevent such tragedies. Efforts are underway to locate the missing individuals, with support being provided to the affected families.
