The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a consultation paper focusing on enhancing public Wi-Fi networks across the nation. The paper aims to gather feedback from stakeholders to boost last-mile digital connectivity and enhance broadband accessibility. It delves into the challenges hindering the expansion of public Wi-Fi, especially in rural and underserved areas, amidst a surge in data consumption.

The consultation paper evaluates global best practices and deployment models to glean insights applicable to India. It scrutinizes the current status of public Wi-Fi implementation, encompassing demand patterns and infrastructure deficiencies. A key aspect of the consultation revolves around establishing sustainable and scalable frameworks by outlining the responsibilities of various stakeholders, including government bodies, telecom service providers, and private entities, for deployment in rural, urban, and high-traffic public locations.

TRAI is seeking inputs on crucial operational aspects such as authorization protocols, user authentication mechanisms, seamless network roaming, and billing structures to enhance user experience and network compatibility. The regulator also emphasizes the necessity for viable business models, soliciting suggestions on revenue streams to ensure the enduring feasibility of public Wi-Fi infrastructure.

The consultation paper arrives at a juncture where public Wi-Fi is increasingly recognized as a pivotal facilitator of affordable internet access and digital inclusivity, complementing mobile broadband networks. Stakeholders are invited to submit written comments by May 25 and counter-comments by June 8, with the paper accessible on TRAI’s official website.
