Police in Berhampore, West Bengal, have arrested Trinamool Congress councillor Bhishmadev Karmakar for reportedly hindering Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury’s election campaign. The arrest followed a complaint filed during the campaign period. Karmakar, who is also the youth Trinamool Congress president of the Murshidabad district, was taken into custody by Berhampore police.
On April 4, during the peak of the Assembly election campaign in West Bengal, Chowdhury, campaigning as a Congress candidate in Baharampur, was allegedly disrupted by Karmakar. The incident led to tense moments, with police intervening to prevent escalation. Chowdhury accused the Trinamool Congress of deliberately obstructing his campaign activities, leading to a written complaint being lodged at the Berhampore police station.
Despite the allegations, Karmakar denied obstructing Chowdhury’s rally and claimed that the Congress leader was provoking unrest by bringing in outsiders. He asserted that local residents protested spontaneously against Chowdhury. Following Karmakar’s arrest, some Trinamool Congress members raised concerns of political vendetta, alleging that party workers were being targeted for political motives. However, police maintained that the arrest was based on specific complaints related to the April 4 incident and was not politically motivated.
