A Trinamool Congress councillor, Sushmita Bhattacharya, from ward number 63 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) was arrested on Tuesday, along with her husband, Salil Chatterjee, on charges of extortion by the Watgunge police station. This arrest brings the total number of Trinamool councillors in KMC arrested on various charges to nine.
The police acted on a complaint filed on June 5 against Sushmita and Salil, leading to the registration of an FIR. Allegations suggest that Sushmita extorted Rs 30 lakh from an elderly man and also threatened him.
Following the change in government in the state, Trinamool leaders are facing public backlash, with accusations ranging from extortion to hoarding government relief. The police are actively pursuing these allegations, resulting in arrests of several Trinamool councillors in KMC.
